The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has committed to strengthening development cooperation with Uganda.

This was during a courtesy call by Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Geneva, Ambassador Marcel Tibaleka on Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo, Director General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) at the UN Agency’s Headquarters in Geneva on Wednesday Afternoon.

Ambassador Tibaleka congratulated Mr Houngbo upon his election as the first African Director General to lead the ILO since its foundation more than 100 years ago.

Ambassador Tibaleka also conveyed Uganda’s gratitude to ILO for its continued support and partnership in areas including; Capacity building for Labour and OSH officers, Development of a Labour Market Information System, Extending the current Apprenticeship Programme to Construction, Manufacturing and Agriculture sectors, and Training in Reporting on the Application of International Labour Standards.

Director General Houngbo in welcoming Ambassador Tibaleka to the ILO headquarters, expressed his desire to continue working with the Government of Uganda in promoting ILO’s decent work agenda.

ILO is a United Nations agency whose mandate is to advance social and economic justice through setting international labour standards.Founded in October 1919 under the League of Nations, it is the first and oldest specialised agency of the UN.
