The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga announced Tuesday the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) resolve to withdraw from the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) polls which are slated to begin on Saturday 17 September 2022.

Mpuuga said NUP will not be party to a process he alleged has been turned into a ritual by the ruling party, by fencing six out of nine positions allocated to Uganda. “NUP is not going to be part of this ritual, it is going to be part of an election where the rules of the games are respected, where multi-party dispensation is upheld

He also called out the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) for interfering with the nomination of other party candidates for the Assembly polls. “Across EAC, Uganda is the only country where the ruling party believes they can have their own members and also choose for other parties

However, the Speaker of parliament, Anita Among assured the house that the elections shall be held in accordance EAC treaty.

The Speaker urged all party whips to provide Parliament with the list of their candidates nominated for EALA who will thereafter be vetted by a select committee of Parliament, whose membership will be drawn from all parties represented in Parliament
