President Yoweri Museveni is expected to deliver the State of Nation address at 2pm today afternoon. The address comes as country is faced with an economic crisis and a possible fresh wave of Covid-19.

Museveni is expected to deliver insights into the current status quo, especially in line with the checks in place to arrest the soaring prices of essential commodities.

Like many countries globally, the East African nation has seen a rise in the cost of living, with prices of essential commodities shooting upwards in response to scarcity and an increase in the cost of production owing to Russia-Ukraine conflict among other factors.

Several opposition wing politicians have come out publicly to protest the soaring commodity prices, blaming the crisis on government’s failure to intervene.

Last month, Museveni urged Ugandans to opt for cassava if they could no longer afford bread due to the spike in prices. This, for many, was an indicator of the government’s endorsement of belt-tightening measures.
He also urged Ugandans to substitute imports with locally produced goods.

In the recent weeks, a total of 35 new cases of the novel corona virus have been picked across different border towns in the country.

The president will be expected to set the record on Covid-19 and the monkeypox virus.

Meanwhile, leading opposition figure, National Unity Platform president Robert Kyagulanyi addressed the nation on Tuesday morning.

In his address, Kyagulanyi castigated the government over the poor state of the economy and their laxity to come up with solutions to assist Ugandans.

He furthermore said the controversial Vinci Coffee deal was intended to benefit a few Ugandans at the expense of the majority.
