Toronto, August 18, 2024 — In a rousing speech delivered at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel, His Excellency Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, better known as Bobi Wine, addressed National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters, underscoring the critical importance of unity among Ugandans in the diaspora. The event, organized by the NUP Canadian chapter, was a pivotal moment in the ongoing struggle for political change in Uganda.

Kyagulanyi’s speech, filled with both urgency and hope, centered on the need for Ugandans abroad to focus on major issues—“major on majors and minor on minors,” as he put it. He stressed the importance of expanding NUP’s presence in Canada, calling for the establishment of more chapters to strengthen the party’s global influence.

A key highlight of Kyagulanyi’s address was his critique of the Ugandan government, particularly its handling of the Kiteezi landfill disaster, which he described as a glaring example of the regime’s failure to protect its citizens. The situation at Kiteezi, which has led to significant loss of life due to mismanagement and neglect, was used to illustrate the broader systemic issues that have plagued Uganda under President Museveni’s rule.

Kyagulanyi urged Ugandans in the diaspora to prepare themselves for future roles in the rebuilding of Uganda. He encouraged them to pursue higher education and consider joining the military forces in their host countries to gain skills that could be critical in the establishment of a new, democratic government in Uganda.

Throughout his speech, Kyagulanyi emphasized the need to remain focused on the “true enemy”—the Museveni regime—while continuing to support NUP’s efforts. He commended the efforts of NUP leaders in Canada, including Nakato Brenda and Doreen Kajumba, urging supporters to collaborate closely with them to achieve common goals and resist divisive tactics allegedly employed by the NRM regime.

Kyagulanyi also took the opportunity to express his gratitude for the unwavering support NUP has received from Ugandans in Canada. He highlighted the significance of unity, not just within the party but also among Ugandan journalists and other stakeholders, as a critical factor in the fight for a free and democratic Uganda.

Kyagulanyi’s visit to Toronto, accompanied by NUP General Secretary Louis Lubongoya and Leader of Opposition Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi, is part of a broader initiative to mobilize Ugandans in the diaspora as NUP continues its campaign for regime change in Uganda. The speech has already sparked renewed enthusiasm among NUP supporters in Canada, signaling a strengthened resolve in the struggle for political transformation back home.
