Following a Presidential directive issued in September last year ordering all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to give at least 40% of their printing works to Uganda Printing and Publishing Corporation (UPPC) and Vision Group.
While delivering the message of the Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda at the launch of celebrations to mark the 120-year anniversary of UPPC, Haj. Yunus Kakande who is the Secretary, Office of the President reechoed the Presidents message.
Kakande said if the directive is respected it will boost national revenue hence boosting service delivery in the country. “it is to eventually develop critical infrastructures such as dams, roads, railways and schools and bring down the costs of public services,
“However, even as the UPPC has brought itself to the highest standard possible in the printer industry; the potential clientele of the UPPC has been slow to respond to the Presidential directive that requires all the MDAs in Uganda to surrender all their printing jobs to the UPPC and the New Vision Printing and Publishing Corporation,” Kakande said.
UPPC Managing Director, Kenneth Oluka said they will run activities to celebrate the historical landmark as one of the oldest institutions in the land starting this month until September 2022. “We would like to leverage on this milestone of longevity to tell you a story of our journey; a journey of 120years of printing and publishing. This journey has sometimes been bumpy, but in most cases it has been steadfast,” He said.
He furthermore revealed that it is important to celebrate the milestone of 120 years owing to their ‘instrumental’ endeavors in shaping the local printing industry.
“we request to have a special session in parliament to recognise the work of the Government Printer over the years. In as far as laws are concerned, the Parliament and the Ministry of Justice and its agencies are our biggest partners. We recognise the partnerships with the First Parliamentary Counsel, Law Reform Commission and the Judiciary.”
UPPC boasts of a rich history from printing Uganda’s first set of laws and as well printing before colonial times. Over the years the Corporation has invested in state of the art printing technology and capacity.
