Minister for Presidency, Milly Babalanda indicated Wednesday that at least 300 jobs will be available for Ugandans upon completion of a new printing factory in Entebbe.

Babalanda revealed this during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a UGX 41 billion printing factory at the Uganda Publishing and Printing Corporation (UPPC) offices in Entebbe Municipality, Wakiso District.

The factory which will be owned by UPPC subsidiary Uganda Security Printing Company (USPC) and German firm Veridos Gmbh will be in charge of printing all classified and security documents for the government. The factory will print passports, national Identity cards, driver’s licenses among other documents.

According to Babalanda, the construction is expected to take about 18 months and upon completion of the factory the country will save revenue that has been spent on printing documents from overseas. “When completed this factory will be a great achievement for Uganda, you will note that the government has been spending a lot of money to print security documents abroad because we lacked the capacity to do so in Uganda.” she said.

Babalanda also said the factory will help weed out counterfeit documents and as well deter forgery which has taken the country by storm.

German Ambassador, H.E Matthias Schuer said that the partnership between USPC and Veridos is a sign of a committed relationship and cooperation between the two countries. He furthermore revealed that his government is committed towards building Uganda’s technical capacity across different areas.

Kenneth Oluka who is the UPPC managing Director said he was elated to be part of this wonderful move to “create a vibrant printing industry that will meet the vast and ever changing client demands as well as thrive in this digital age,”

“It is double happiness for the UPPC family this year because it is also the 120th anniversary of the corporation, we are planning a series of activities that will climax in September.” he added
