Rwandan President, Paul Kagame has revealed that he is eager to retire from office as president after 23 years to practice Journalism.

Kagame said this during a joint press briefing with his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto in Kigali.

The Rwandan President said that plans for his retirement and succession have been hatched by the ruling party, Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF).

Kagame adds he was not necessarily interested in choosing his successor but rather creating an environment that would give rise to people who can lead.

“We have been having this discussion within our party since 2010 but circumstances, challenges and history of Rwanda tend to dictate certain things,”

Kagame has been at the helm of Rwanda since 2000. A contentious referendum in 2015 scrapped the presidential two term-limit.
